A comprehensive approach to breastfeeding of newborns has earned the “Baby-Friendly” Designation for Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen. An international program sponsored by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF), the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is designed to encourage and acknowledge hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for lactation. The hospital practices three core principles: Rooming in of mother and baby, skin-to-skin contact after delivery, and placing the baby at the breast to nurse in the first hour after delivery. Texas Health Allen is the first hospital in Texas to earn Baby-Friendly status. Two other facilities in the Texas Health Resources family of hospitals — Texas Health Harris Methodist Hurst-Euless-Bedford and Texas Health Harris Methodist Stephenville — also are recognized as Baby-Friendly providers.
