Why do I lose most of my water pressure when my pump turns on?

I installed a new pump and pressure tank. The pump is a 1/2 hp shallow well jet pump and the tank is a 20 gallon pre-charged tank. I have alright pressure until the pump turns on and then it slows to almost nothing. I don’t know how it worked before the new items, but I would think with a new pump and tank the probem would probly not be either of those. I did however use an old check valve before the pump. With a shallow well is it possible to take that out? I know lots of questions, but I am so tired of the trickling showers and having to wait to use the water after flushing the toilet. So I would be very grateful for any ideas. Also as many people nowdays I am working on a very limited budget so cheaper alternatives than “call a pro” would be even better. LOL Thanks in advance!!!
