Whats the best way to clone a Drive?

I have a HP Mini with a 16GB SSD drive running Windows XP. I want to clone the entire Drive and store it on an external Hard Drive before upgrading to Windows 7. I want the option to revert to the pre- Win7 Drive image. The program must be able to see a USB external hard drive because I wont be able to store the image on the SSD.

Acronis Trueimage is what I use for that very purpose. There is a “free” similar product from Seagate, called “Disk Wizard”:

It is supposed to work only for Seagate drives, but I’ve had success with a mixed configuration…

Other than that, there are many free Linux disk cloning utilities, many on bootable CDs
