What’s the best way to use the manual setting on my Point and Shoot?

I bought the Samsung SL420 Point and Shoot

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4540521&CatId=3624

It comes with a decent amount of options in the program or manual setting but when I try to take pictures with it they come out terrible.

I use the Smart Auto setting and get GREAT results. Program/Manual is always out of focus, but I think I could get great results if I knew how to use it.

Does anyone have any experience with camera and can tell me how to set it up right?

I take pictures of food

Any good guides Anyone can recommend to taking better pictures with point and shoots would be greatly appreciated. Especially if they deal with taking food photos with a point and shoot

Thanks!

The Samsung SL420 is a simple, point & shoot camera that doesn’t even have Manual settings. It only has one of 14 Scene Modes and P (Program AE) which is exactly like Auto, but also gives you the option to change your ISO, White Balance and Metering, etc.

For close-ups of food, try mounting your camera on a tripod, set the delay timer and use Macro if the lens is only 10-80cm (wide) or 50-50cm (tele) from your subject. You also have an Auto Macro option. Your camera has a dedicated Macro button on the back (flower icon). Make sure you have plenty of light and don’t use the flash. But, also try the flash to compare results.

Look up…Macro, Auto Macro and Scene modes in your Manual
