Taekwondo Side Kick Tutorial (Kwonkicker)

This is a detailed Taekwondo Kickboxing tutorial for the “Side Kick”, effective in Kickboxing, MMA & Olympic style competition. Q: What stretches are best for this kick? A: This kick requires moderate front split flexibility in order to perform it effectively. Q: What’s in the base of the heavy bag? A: I’ve filled the base with 270lbs (122.5kg) of all purpose sand. There is no trick. It is heavy for me, as it is twice my weight. I weigh only 132lbs (60kg) in this video.

    All your kicks are awesome. You’re a great kicker. The only thing is I feel with the step side kick is it’s usually better for smaller people to use ironically as taller people need much more space to send the kick into a smaller persons torso. Its not even worth the effort most of the time. What about Sanshou’s way of doing the side kick, the stamp kick? After Seeing this type of side kick i feel it is the most effective one for the cage. It is not telegraphed and comes out very quickly.

    @player445363 I do tkd and I was told if the are in a bladed stance which is them standing slightly side ways when fighting, aim for their hip, throw em’ off balance, and if you’ve been hit there, you know it hurts like hell.

    @hedgehogs Its not a main point scorer and shoes do help, but I’d like to add that it can play games with your opponents confidence and setup techniques too. Rear leg is slow and powerful, but I use lead leg side kicks when i see someone starting to through a rear leg round or side kick. It doesn’t always get past their guard, but the contact on the guard and them turning on one foot knocks them off balance and puts them in a difficult position to counter strike if you continue attacking.

    @kwonkicker I’ll add that, a side kick is a great defensive kick. Rear leg round kick is one of the most common kicks used and a lead leg side kick will beat a rear leg round 90% of the time. Rear leg kicks requires that you turn your shoulders which gives you that “squared up” window. @player445363 look for that opening. Shoot it out and reset as fast as possible for follow up techniques or defense.

    @player445363 If you and your opponent are in a closed stance, aim your front leg at the head or back leg at the body or head. In a closed stance, the heel of the front leg wont line up properly with your opponents midsection and you’ll often end up hitting with your toes first instead of your heel. In an open stance, the heel of the front leg will line up perfectly with your opponents midsection and is sure to hit before your toes. Front leg also works to the head in an open stance.

    @player445363 This is not a kick you’ll score a lot in sparring. It’s slow, and easy to deflect, block, or evade.

    In self defense, however, when you’re wearing shoes and your opponent doesn’t wear gloves and forearm guards, it can easily produce fractures.

    @fighterguy1988 This kick is powerful but slow. TKD doesn’t use it in close range – -for that, there are other kicks. You only commit to it either when you have a good setup, or to bridge the distance. The author emphasizes that this is the long range kick. That’s what the little hop is for.

    Great video. The only crucial thing not mentioned is how when the kicking foot makes the impact, the supporting foot should become planted firmly, and the knee of the supporting leg should become almost-to-completely locked, for maximum transfer of force. Your technique shows that flawlessly in the video, but it’s a nuance worth verbalizing.

    im just starting taekwondo i have 5 months im already white, yellow tip and as i use 1 leg more than the other its like dislocating when i do this kick (it dislocates and locates back xd) do you know why it could be?

    My sidekick works great on the heavy bag, but when I spar with my friends, its different. A lot of them do not stand with there entire body squared up (Shoulders parallel to their hip). Instead, there body is angled sideways a little bit, so when I throw my sidekick towards my opponents chest or stomach, it hits them, but then it just grazes off them, no matter how much power I put in my side kick. I’d like to aim for the head, but I’m not flexible enough yet. What should I aim for?
