A tutorial on film fighting techniques and stunts for independent (indie) action movies. In this first episode we start with the basics of selling a hit as part of a series on choregraphing fight scenes and stunts. This indymogul style film school series will cover basic stage and film fighting, martial arts techniques for movies, camera angles & cinematography, theory behind the action, equipment and much more. Please subscribe! I am John Nguyen and have been acting, directing, producing and action choreographing for several years around Hollywood and the Bay Area. If you are in need of an action choreographer, drop me a line and I may be able to direct you to someone in your area. My background in addition to filmmaking is in wushu, shaolin kung fu, choy lay fut, tae kwon do, boxing, muay thai, and several other martial arts.
Awesome and hilarious! Great work, keep it up!!
these guys have WAY too much fun doing this…
Thanks 1st of all….can you help me out one thing????
How does the body roll inthe air two three times when the actor kicks….is that a chroma key effect with green rope tied and pulled or is that done by some gymnastic expert who can flip and roll two three times…pls help me..shall be greatful.
@kontonusus Oh and you can make other sounds this way as well. This weekend we are shooting a fight scene where two PVC pipes are painted silver to make them look like steel. In a couple of places the pipes make contact with things so we took a camera and recorded real pipes hitting things to make the sound like a pumpkin hit makes a really good “head strike” and taking two pipes an hitting them together replaces the plastic on plastic shots where one pipe blocks another.
@kontonusus This is going to sound like I’m being a smart ass but google it. You can find a lot of sounds this way. Also if you have a camera to film it you have a mic built into it. Use that to make your own sounds. You can hang a leather coat or some other heavy coat and hit it with various objects to make sounds and breaking celery makes a great bone breaking sound. After you record the hits just go into you editing program and take out the video part and cut the sounds to smallter clips.
you guys are great.hilarious movies loads of information.Keep u the god work and thanks
where do i get this Sound FX for free or cheap?
Thankss for the great tutorial
Subbed. Great work guys. I’d like to see a camera movement breakdown. Keep it up.
Haha, You guys are hilarious. We’ve been feeling our way around quick turnaround choreography;

your vids have given us a lot of stuff to think about.
I agree I think selling the hit is sometimes MUCH harder than delivering it. Like when you see the stunt guy 900 spin to the ground, much harder than the standing round kick that sent him there.
Great channel, I think it’ll be the next indymogul! Are you guys ever on the East Coast?
LMAO at 4:55
awesome dude I subscribed
ew john. you need to wash your hands!
You have a dead pixel in your camera. You may want to Youtube how you can fix it.
These tutorials are the best I’ve seen even from pro videos please do more.
I SUBSCRIBED…..! DON’T MAKE ME DISAPPOINTED….!
Gotta show how to operate the camera for the next show that would be a big help – shot selection is probably the hardest part so we can shoot a better illusion of the hit – must have camera/edit tricks for fights <3
I’m digging this a lot. Very quickly becoming on of my favorite subs. I would love to see some short film action from you guys.
Thumbs up for the human clapboard!
Love the work you guys are doing, its fantastic!, am always looking forward to learning more!
i am so perverted… through the whole video im like
that mic looks like a penis
