Do you think David Beckham made the right choice by moving to LA Galaxy?

I’ll tell you something, I know what he was trying to do. Back in Pele’s time, he played pro in America for a few years because he wanted to show football to America, as they lacked knowledge of this beutiful sport. He introduced REAL football to them and made it more popular in America. Mr. Beckham here tried to copycat that and guess what? It did not work. He should have stayed in Real Madrid and continued being an all star.

Well, I like the fact that I can see him play here live, because I love football (soccer) and the great players who play the sport, and he is one of the best today. However, I do agree that he should have stayed at Real Madrid, because in the MLS season his team wasn’t at their best. I mean the LA Galaxy didn’t even make it to the playoffs! He’s a good man and very good looking and I want the best for him, and I’ll support his every decision.

Due to his popularity here in America even before he decided to join the MLS is a good idea for both Beckham and football in America. This is so, because it football the kick it needs in this country.

The only thing I don’t like about him coming to America is that everyone who doesn’t know anything about the sport thinks hes some football god with amazing skills, the best in the world. I think he’s past his prime now and if someone who actually watched the sport would see he’s not the best, and never was. It’s all how the media portrays him.

No … i think he did it because hes already played in england and spain possibly the two best leagues apart from Italy…

He said he doesnt want to play in Italy and he has alot of freinds in L.A , His wife wanted to move there, better move for his kids, and his carrer was coming to an end

LASTLY HE WANTED TO BE A BIGGER SUPERSTAR A WORLD ICON

I think he made the right financial choice. Considering when he moved there Posh wasn’t really bringing in any income he was the sole provider and he wasn’t being picked for Real Madrid. He may have gone to America to promote football and make it one of the most popular sports in the US but him alone wan’t going to do that. As you say even the best footballer ever couldn’t do that when Pele himself played there. Now the Spice Girls have there comeback tour which will earn Victoria millions I think he should move back to Europe for the benefit of his career because lets face it he earns enough money anyway.

  • Farhad F.1 says:

well they gave him alot of money like about a hundred million dollars and he is getting old and he can’t keep being a star and the team would kick him out so he used the oppurtunity and got the money and went t a team that needs him.

  • jjr3012 says:

the only reson he went to usa is because he was to old and to slow to play in the top leagues in europe anymore…..and if any club in the top leagues did try get him they would be wasting there money…like the americans did.

On what grounds can you say that Becks’ first season in LA “did not work”? If his goal was to make professional soccer more popular here – and that is true – then he has so far been successful. For 2007, league attendance was up for the first time ever over the prior year, and also did not decline during the season. Both of these can be attributed to his arrival in mid-season. MLS attendance is now on a par with the Eredivisie and SPL, and is closing in on Serie A.

Admittedly, the growth is slow, but it is still growth, and Beckham is clearly a part of it. But if anything, slow growth is preferable over flashy attendance numbers that die off after a relatively brief period, as was the case with the NASL of Pele’s day. Moreover, Beckham was dogged by injuries and barely played in the half-season he has been here, but still sold tickets and merchandise. And beyond that, the LA Galaxy were mediocre at best in 2007. With a healthy start to next season, and a much improved team next year, the Beckham effect and the resulting growth can only be expected to continue.

Low attendance numbers must also be considered in light of the wide array of sports and entertainment options available in the US. Thus soccer in the US not only has to overcome the problem of unfamiliarity, it has substantial well-entrenched competition for fans. At various points in its season, MLS competes with all the major professional leagues (MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL), as well as their college counterparts (for example, the MLS season kicks off in the middle of NCAA March Madness!). This kind of competition simply does not exist in most other countries where soccer is the dominant spectator sport.

Beyond that, Beckham has raised the international profile of MLS significantly. I doubt that many Europeans would know anything about MLS were it not for his presence. The Galaxy’s recent Australian tour was also a huge success, with unheard-of crowds down under for two friendlies.

Additionally, I am sure that it was a good decision on a personal level for Beckham and his family.

    Its a new challenge.
LA is a great city for exposure
    Good busines for Posh
Can continue to play for several more years
Good money and bigger modeling market
He still gets called to national duty
Its probably easier for him to travel in public
The average american has no idea who his kids are

Yes, I think it was a fine choice.

  • Rahul B says:

his time was over and he knew it. if he stayed in europe, he wouldnt get as much money, fame and attention as from going to US. he hasnt impacted football in the US at all. he is just a name… not a quality player.

  • soccerwanderer says:

He did good going to Galaxy just like Angel did, both players that could still start for most big clubs in the world coming to MLS
