A newborn baby girl from East Timor is recovering in the Canberra Hospital’s Paediatric Unit after a multi-agency effort to airlift her to Australia for life-saving surgery. The effort began within hours of the birth of baby Santa Mandalena Rebelo, who was born with her bowel and most of her stomach outside her body and has concluded with the baby now recovering from her surgery. Baby Santa is one of several dozen children from Oceanic countries throughout the region who are brought to Australia each year for life-saving medical treatment by Rotary’s Humanitarian Program ROMAC and are assisted by the department. The department makes every effort to assist these children, not just with their initial visit and treatment in Australia but also with any follow-up medical visits that may be required.
